  • March 4, 1791 - Vermont is the 14th state admitted to the Union, becoming the first state added to the Union following the original 13 colonies.
    Area - 9,615 sq. miles        Capital - Montpelier

- Vermont is the first state to outlaw slavery by legislation.
- After the first 13 colonies, Vermont is the first state admitted to the union .
- In Vermont you can be as young as 18 to be Governor or a state senator.


- In 1840, voter turnout among eligible voters was 82%.  Today, even with the advances in transportation and communication, voter turnout is far less.
- 1777 -At Windsor, in 1777, Vermont declares itself independent.  Vermont is the first state to adopt a constitution with universal male voting, public schools and the abolishment of slavery. Vermont is the first state to abolish slavery.
- “An Act to Prevent the Sale and Transportation of Negroes and Malattoes Out of This State.” passes in 1786 by the Vermont Legislature.
- Vermont becomes 14th state in 1791.
- Montpelier chosen as the capital in
1805.

- In 1820 all but one vote, not recorded, voted against proposed proslavery amendments to the state constitution. The following resolution is passed by the State Legislature: “Slavery is incompatible with the vital principles of all free governments and tends to their ruin. It paralyzes industry, the greatest source of national wealth, stifles the love of freedom, and endangers the safety of the nation. It is prohibited by the laws of nature which are equally binding on governments and individuals. The right to introduce and establish slavery in a free government does not exist.”
- The Liberty Party is formed in Vermont in 1840.
- First Republican governor elected in 1855.  Republicans will control that office until 1962.
- Chester A. Arthur of Fairfield becomes U.S. President in 1881
- Women are given the right to vote in local town elections in 1918.
- Women's Right to Vote is adopted in 1921.
- The first democrat governor Is elected in 1962. It has been over 100 years since the last democrat governor.
