  • March 1, 1867 - Congress overrode President Andrew Johnson's veto of the 1866 Nebraska statehood bill, admitting Nebraska, as the 37th state, to the Union.
    Area - 77,359 sq. miles        Capital - Lincoln

- Nebraska is acquired by the U.S. in the 1803 Louisiana Purchase.
- The Trade and Intercourse Act of 1834 prohibits the trespassing of whites on Native American indian lands west of the Mississippi River.
- Kansas-Nebraska Act is passed by the U.S. Congress on May 30, 1854. People in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska were allowed to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery. The Act served to negate the Missouri Compromise of 1820 that prohibited slavery north of latitude 36°30΄.
- Nebraska joined the Union as the 37th state on March 1, 1867. 
- The people elect David Butler as the first governor in 1867. 
- Lincoln becomes the Nebraska State capital on July 29, 1867.
- The first national convention of the Populist or People's Party is held in 1892 in Omaha.
- Silas Robbins in 1895 becomes the first black person admitted to the Nebraska State Bar Association
- William Jennings Bryan of Nebraska is nominated in 1896 by both the Democratic and Populist parties to be their presidential candidate.

- A 1934 amendment to the State Constitution combines the House and Senate into one chamber making Nebraska the only legislature that is unicameral. 
- Nebraska also is the only State that has a "nonpartisan" legislature.

- The first unicameral session is held in 1937 by the state legislature.
- Richard Cheney is born in Lincoln, Nebraska, on January 30th 1941. He grows up in Casper, Wyoming.  Cheney earns his bachelor's and master's of arts degrees from the University of Wyoming. Dick Cheney becomes Vice President in 2001 and serves two terms.
- Gerald Ford of Omaha becomes President of the United States when Richard Nixon resigns in 1974.
- Initiative 300 passes in 1982 to prohibit individual farmers selling their land to corporations.
- The 1987 State Legislature adopts two measures that authorized tax breaks for businesses as incentives to create new jobs in Nebraska.
- To encourage voter turnout in 1991 Nebraska's Legislature changes the allotment of electoral votes to a winner-take-all basis.
