On February 22nd a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocks Mozambique. 4 people are killed and 36 wounded. Over 300 buldings were damaged.

Java, Indonesia is hit by a 6.3 earthquake on May 26th. two after shocks of 4.8 and 4.6 occured 4 and 6 hours later. Tsunami warnigs were issued but did not occur. It is speculated that tsunami rumors were started by organized looters who burglarized homes while the owners had fled to safety. 5,749 are killed and 38,568 are injured. 600,000 people are left homeless. 127,000 homes were destroyed and 451,000 more were damaged. Damages in U.S. currency run to about 3.1 billion dollars.

A Magnitude 7.7 quake epicenters south of Java in Indonesia on July 17th. 665 people are killed, 9,275 are injured and 65 are reported as missing. Over 1,600 buildings and 874 boats were destroyed or damaged. Tsunamis acounted for many deaths with heights ranging up to 4.6 m.

The Samoa Islands are shaken on September 28th by a 6.9 earthquake. A resulting tsunami reached a wave height of 16 cm (6.3").

Hawaii's Island of Hawaii is hit by a 6.7 earthquake. The quake damages or blocks roads with landslides on the island and cause power outages thrughout the Hawaiian Islands. Several minor injures were caused with 1,173 buildings damaged. Damages reached 73 millon dollars. One tsunami was reported with a wave height of 10 cm at Kawaihae Harbor.

The Kuril Islands are hit by an 8.3 earthquake on November 15th. A tsunami wave height of 34 cm (13.4") at Honolulu, Hawaii, injured one person. Other tsunamis were recorded around the Pacific Ocean with various wave heights from 5 to 176 cm (2" - 5' 9"). Later the same day a 6.7 quake hits east of the islands.

The area around Taiwan is quaked with a 7.1 on December 26th. Two people were killed and 40 injured. Undersea Communication cables were severed causing communication disruption through much of East and Southeast Asia. Another 6.9 quake hits the area later the same day.

A magnitude 8.1 quake hits east of the Kuril Islands on January 13th. Tremors were felt in various parts of Japan. Tsunamis were recorded at tide station around the Pacific Rim ranging from 4 cm to 37 cm (1.5" to 14.5").

On March 6th in Southern Sumatra, Indonesia a magnitude 6.4 quake rocks the region. 67 People are killed and 826 wounded. 43,719 homes were destroyed or damaged. The quake was also felt in Malaysia and Singapore.

The west coast of Honshu, Japan, on March 25th, feels the rumblings of a 6.7 earthquake. One person was killed and 359 injured. 13,556 homes were destroyed. The quake caused 60 landslides, damaged roads, cracks in the Noto Airport landing field and disruption of train and water services. A tsunami was generated that hit several other Japanese shores.

The Solomon Islands were hit with three earthquakes on April 1st. The first quake was a magnitude 8.1 the second 6.6 then the third was 6.9. Several villages were destroyed and 52 people killed by the quakes and tsunamis. 300 homes, schools, and hospitals were destroyed and 500 houses damaged. landslides were caused by the uplifts of the ground. A tsunami around the Pacific rim measured from 8 cm to 2 meters. The tsunamis caused damage in Papua New Guinea, Rossel Island and Bougainville. In the U.S.A., California and Hawaii saw Tsunamis recorded from 20 cm to 22 cm (7.9" to 8.6").

A magnitude 6.6 quake hits near the west coast of Honshu, Japan on July 16th. The earthquake injures 1,088 killing nine. 875 houses are damaged as well as roads, bridges and train rails.

Four quakes hit Indonesia on September 12th & 13th. The first, the largest quake of 2007, an 8.5 hits Southern Sumatra. The second hits at 7.9 over the Kepulauan Mentawai area. The third hits on the 13th and measures 6.5 followed by the 4th quake at 7.0. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th were in the Kepulauan Mentawai area. In the four quakes 25 people are killed with 161 injured. 56,425 homes are destroyed or damaged. Tsunamis hit various tide stations around the Indian Ocean that include Oman, Thailand and Australia. They measured from 4.5 cm to 227 cm (1.8" to 7' 5.5").

A second quake hits with a 6.8 the next day, November 15th. 2 people are killed with 65 injured. 15,000 people were displaced by the destruction of their homes. Tsunami recorded wave heights were from 9.5 cm to 25.5 cm (3.7" to 10").

A 5.6 earthquake hits Kyrgyzstan on January 1st. 5,385 buildings are destroyed or damaged. 5,300 people are left homeless.

In the area of Lac Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo 6.0 earthquake occurs on February 3rd. 7 people are killed with 447 injured. 1,087 houses are destroyed and 2,378 buildings are damaged. In Rwanda 37 people are killed, 643 injured, 1,201 houses destroyed and 24 buildings damaged. The quake is also felt in Tanzania and Uganda.

On March 20th a 7.2 earthquake hits the border area between Xinjiang and Xizang. 2,204 houses are damaged or destroyed at Yutian in Xinjiang. 46,594 people were displaced in Xinjiang.

A 7.9 magnitude earthquake hits eastern Sichuan in China on May 12th. 69,195 people are killed, 374,177 injured with 18,392 missing but presumed dead. 15 million people had evacuated their homes with 5 million left homeless. Around 5.36 million buildings collapsed and another 21 million buildings damaged. Damage estimations were set at 86 billion U.S. dollars. 700 of the dead were buried in landslides that also created 34 barrier lakes threatening 700,000 people that lived downstream. Seizmic activity from this quake was felt in Bangladesh, Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

A second earthquake hits the next day measuring 5.6 killing two more people.

Two quakes rocks near the north coast of Papua, Indonesia on January 3rd. The first had a magnitude of 7.7 with the second being 7.4.  5 people are killed, 250 are injured and 840 buildings are damaged. Various tide stations record tsunami wave heights between 3.7 cm to 78 cm (1.4" to 2' 6.7").

Two earthquakes strike Central Itally. The first a 6.3 quake hits Central Italy on April 6th. The quake was also felt in Austria, Albania, Croatia, Germany, Malta, Slovenia, Montenegro, and Switzerland.

Tide stations around the Pacific Ocean recorded tsunami wave heights from 4 cm to 411 cm (1.5" to 13' 5.8"); the highest at Pago Pago.

A 7.6 earthquake on September 30th hits southern Sumatra in Indonesia. The next day a 6.6 quake rakes the area. In the quakes 1,120 people were killed; 2,902 were injured; and 279,000 buildings were destroyed or damaged. Over 451,000 people were displaced. A local tsunami was recorded as 27 cm (10.6") at Padang. Damages were estimated at 10 million U.S. dollars.

On October 7th a 7.8 earthquake shakes the Santa Cruz Islands. The islands are hit again the next day, October 8th with a magnitude of 6.6. Around the Pacific Rim tide stations record tsunami wave heights from 6 cm to 62 cm (2.4" to 2') with the highest at Port-Vila.

a 6.6 earthquake hits the area of Sumbawa of Indonesia on November 17th. 2 people are killed and hundreds injured. Damages were estimated at 2.43 million U.S. dollars.

In Malawi a 5.9 quake hits on December 8th. One person is killed and 15 injured. 3,000 buildings were destroyed or damaged.

Two earthquakes rumble the Solomon Islands on January July 4th. The first quake registered at 6.6 and caused minor tsunami. The second was 7.1. 500 homes were damaged. Some of the damage was from a tsunami that hit Rendova with a height of 3m (9' 10").

A 7.0 earthquake rattles the area around Haiti on January 13th. Up to 220,000 people have died and 300.000 were injured. One and a half million people were displaced from their homes. The extensive damage and death toll draw relief efforts from around the world. Nine days later a 5.9 quake hits the area on January 21st, adding to the damage, by the 24th, 52 aftershocks of 4.5+ were registered. 280,000 houses and buildings had collapsed or were badly damaged.
This is the worse quake disaster in Western Hemisphere history.

An 8.8 earthquake hit central Chile near the city of Concepcion at 3:34 the morning of February 27th. A 15-storey building colapsed, others caught fire, bridges collapsed, and the rising death toll reaching 521. The devastation of Chile's infrastructure may cast an economic blow to the stability of the country. Initial Damages are estimated at 14 Billion dollars. A 6.6 quake hit Chile on March 4th.
More than 33 aftershocks were felt before noon; one, a magnitude 6.9 (a second quake?). The quake generated a tsunami that had reached New Zealand and was expected to reach Hawaii and Russia but became non-events. The Tsunami hit the French Polynesia coast-line with 6 foot waves. Nations around the Pacific Rim prepared for the tsunami. It is the largest quake since a magnitude 9.0 hit
off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on December 26, 2004.

The 7.1 September 4th New Zealand quake is also known by three other names, 2010 Canterbury earthquake, Christchurch earthquake and Darfield earthquake. New Zealand's southern island was hit at 4:35 am. There were two injuries and one heart attack. One foreshock of 5.8 hit just 5 seconds before the main tremmor. Aftershocks up to 6.3 continued into 2011.
