A 7.0 earthquake rocked the Ghir area of Iran on April 10th. 5,054 people, 1 fith of the provincial population died. The death toll would have been greater except that a majority of the people were working in fields and escaped the collapse of the sun-dried adobe or mud mortar buildings.

In Nicaragua on December 23rd a 6.2 quake hits Managua with 3 low intensity shocks. 5,000 people were killed, 20,000 injured and 250,000 left homeless. 53,000 homes, 4 hospitals and 750 classrooms were destroyed.
This quake may have been the first worldwide exposure to the generosity of American aid. Nicaragua, 47 years later still has signs of the quake. Debri from the crumbled buildings had been dumped into Xolotlan Lake. In cleanup efforts the debri is being dredged up and piled onshore. The mounds are scavended by the poor for scrap metal to sell to the scrap metals merchants.

Adobe buildings in more than 50 towns and villages were destroyed in a 6.8 earthquake that strikes Puebla in MexicoOn August 28th. The quake kills 527 people and injures 4,000. More than 200 churches that dated to the colonial period were destroyed.

This was the first shown concern by a non-western country of interest in construction techniques to reduce earthquake casualties.
