Labor Day Poetry

             The Heroes

                      by Roger W Hancock

Some heroes obvious, some unsung,

their lives and health, tempting fate.

Vulnerable in tasks for our civilization,

few glories for their life’s profession.

The Service men in our Armed Forces,

the cause be sure for freedom’s sake.

For their family, strangers, citizens all,

few medals show their life’s duress.

The policeman whose life is in peril,

by high-speed chase, gunfight ensued.

The simple traffic stop may kill,

few medals show the dangers faced.

The man who is trained as a fireman,

to save our lives, our homes from fire.

The first on scene when aid in need,

few medals show each hazardous deed.

The utilities that keep our comfort whole,

power and phone, the men on poles.

Sewage, garbage disposed for health,

no recognition for the civilian fight.

The many others whose work obscure,

performing tasks with risks not yours.

Construction, or the viral flu to cure,

no medals glory for the civilian plight.

      Labor Day

            by Roger W Hancock

Day of labor movement honors,
for us our evening leasure.
Better pay, vacation pleasure,
marks end, of summer hours.

          Labor Gains

                 by Roger W Hancock

Labor gained through the struggles,
through the struggle of Labor's pains.
Labor Day a three day weekend,
marking the end of the leisure season.
Unions organized to negotiate,
conditions in the workers' shops.
The labor movement fought with strikes,
to gain the union worker's rights.
Non-union labor also gained,
benefits of the struggles fought.
The 8-hour day and two day weekends,
are victories, the Unions won.
When you picnic on Labor Day weekend,
remember the struggles, remember the fight.

          Hero Least
                 by Roger W Hancock

The Hero comes when least expect,
from the one, whose most unsuspect.
Without thought of danger faced,
with veins of iron adrenalin laced.
As unsuspect from nowhere comes,
this one to help his fellow man.
The Hero works with no acclaim,
for work to save from future pain.
Just a job one must perform,
meticulously plot to advance our norm.
As unsung from nowhere comes,
this one to help his fellow man.
