- March 1, 1803 -
Ohio is the 17th state admitted to the Union.
Ohio became the first state west of the Alleghenies.
Area - 44,828 sq. miles
Capital - Columbus

Motto - With God all things are
possible. Nickname - Buckeye State
- Ohio becomes part of the
Northwest Territory in 1787.
- Ohio is admitted to the Union on March 1, 1803, as the 17th
state.
- Chillicothe is named state capital in 1803.
- "Black Laws" restricting the legal rights of free blacks are
passed by the Ohio legislature in 1804.
- The state capitol is moved to Zanesville in 1810.
- Columbus named in 1816 as the state capitol.

- William Henry Harrison,
of North Bend, in 1840 is elected as the 9th United States
President.
- In 1868, Ulysses S. Grant,
of Point Pleasant, is elected 18th President of the United
States.
- Rutherford B. Hayes,
from Delaware, Ohio is elected president in 1876.
- In 1879 Thomas A. Edison of Milan, Ohio invented the
incandescent bulb.
- James Garfield, of
Orange, is elected 20th President of the United States in 1880.
- The first electric streetcar began operation in Cleveland in
1884.
- Benjamin Harrison, from North Bend in 1888, is elected the
23rd President of the U.S.
- The first gasoline-powered automobile in America was made in
Ohio City by John W. Lambert.
- William Howard Taft, of
Cincinnati, is elected in 1908 as the 27th President of the
United States.
- Warren G. Harding, from
Corsica, is elected the 29th President of the U.S. in 1920.
- The passing of the Bing Act in 1921, requires students to
remain in school until graduation or age 18.
- The first woman to serve on the Ohio State Supreme Court was
Florence Allen in 1922.
- The first Ohio State sales tax is passes in 1934 and is set at
3 percent.
- In 1953 Congress discovers Ohio's statehood had not been
officially recognized, it passes a resolution declaring Ohio's
entry into the Union as March 1, 1803.
- Ohio adopts a state motto in 1958, "With God all Things are
Possible."
- The Ohio Civil Rights Commission is created in 1959 to
eliminate employment discrimination.
- Terms of some state officials are increased in 1959, from two
to four years.
- John Glenn from New Concord was the first American to orbit
the Earth in 1962.
- The State income tax is adopted in 1971.

- Stephanie Tubbs Jones became the first Black American to serve
in the Ohio Congress in 1996.
- John Glenn becomes the oldest American in 1998 to fly in
Space.
